At the Feet of Jesus

Luke 10:38-42

“Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Have you ever been so busy that you feel like your relationship with God is being neglected?

In the hustle of life, it's easy for us to get caught up in the daily grind of life and lose our focus of what truly matters. In Luke 10:38-42, we see a story that perfectly illustrates this struggle.

Jesus and His disciples entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. As Jesus came inside, Martha busied herself with accommodating her guest, while her sister, Mary, sat down at Jesus' feet to listen to His teaching.

Martha becomes frustrated and starts complaining to Jesus that Mary is not helping her. Martha’s frustration is understandable — she’s doing her best to serve Jesus. But in her busyness, she misses the opportunity to simply be with Him.

Jesus gently responded, "Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

Lessons for us to learn:

Martha's criticism of Mary reveals many of our struggles, one of which is that we often judge others for not meeting our expectations, especially when we're overwhelmed. However, Jesus' response to Martha highlights an essential truth: Mary made the right choice by prioritizing time with Him.

Another important point is that Mary didn't need to defend her actions; Jesus did it for her. This teaches us a crucial lesson: when we focus on our relationship with Jesus, we don't need to worry about others' opinions or defend our choices. Our commitment to God speaks for itself.

By keeping ourselves at the feet of Jesus, we not only find peace but we are also aligning ourselves with God’s will for our lives. Let’s strive to be more like Mary, prioritizing our relationship with Jesus above all else.

Matthew 6:33
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
